The Sacred Months is a bold peacebuilding initiative transforming an established Islamic principle into a practical, life-saving mechanism for today’s conflicts. Anchored in the Qur’anic concept of Al-Ashhur Al-Hurum - four sacred months in which armed-conflict is prohibited, the project seeks to activate these periods as predictable windows for ceasefires, humanitarian access, and mediation especially in intra-Muslim conflicts. By integrating Islamic legal authority, international humanitarian law, and field-tested peacebuilding strategies, The Sacred Months aims to reduce civilian harm, enable the delivery of critical aid, and create recurring opportunities for dialogue in some of the world’s most fragile contexts. What are the sacred months?
The Sacred Months—Al-Ashhur Al-Hurum—are four months in the Islamic calendar (Dhul-Qi’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab) that Allah ﷻ made sacred & forbade warfare and emphasised peace, restraint, and sanctity. These months were given this sanctity since the creation of the Heavens & the Earth. They were upheld & honoured by our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as sacred times. They served as a divine pause, allowing space for reflection, pilgrimage, justice, and reconciliation among communities.
Just as Allah ﷻ has sanctified certain places above others, He ﷻ has also elevated specific periods of time—making it more sacred & honoured than the rest.

It all begins with an idea. Inspired by over a decade of academic research in Islamic law, international humanitarian law, and prophetic models of reconciliation, this NGO will serve as a trusted platform to promote, protect, & institutionalise the sacred months.

Advocate for humanitarian pauses during the Sacred Months in active intra-Muslim conflicts—based on Qur’anic guidance and historical practice.

Educate communities, scholars, and leaders on the legal and spiritual foundations of the Sacred Months, through workshops, webinars, and digital materials.
Launch an annual global campaign each Sacred Month to unite Muslims in duʿāʾ, reflection, and calls for peace in the sacred months—through khutbahs, videos, and masjid partnerships.

Mediate between conflicting parties, bringing together Islamic scholars, NGOs, international bodies, tribal elders, and trusted local networks to encourage compliance.

Monitor ceasefires during the Sacred Months, and coordinate with humanitarian and development NGOs to ensure that aid can be delivered, wounds can be treated, and dignity can be restored—while the guns are silent.

Develop a research-based conflict prediction model, enabling us to identify regions at high risk of intra-Muslim conflict—so we can educate stakeholders, influencers, and community leaders before tensions escalate, and proactively promote the sanctity of the Sacred Months as a path to prevention.

Raise global awareness through online campaigns, media storytelling, and partnerships with Islamic institutions and influencers.

Engage with global institutions such as the OIC, the Muslim World League, and the United Nations, to advocate for the formal recognition of the Sacred Months as a legitimate, faith-based model for ceasefires, conflict de-escalation and humanitarian corridors.

Convene an international Sacred Ceasefire Council—a gathering of respected scholars across madhāhib and regions—to issue coordinated fatwas and statements encouraging observance of the Sacred Months among muslims.
